This canyon is a gateway to some of the best and most scenic riding you’ll find anywhere in the country

Set in the heart of Ut county between Orem Ut and Provo Ut, it's quick and easy to access from in and around town as well as from the freeway (800No Orem East Exit from I15).  Provo Canyon is and will always be one of my favorites. From the days of being a young shithead and racing up the canyon on my sportbike at 130 mph to now, rolling my Streetglide listening to the tunes and wife holding tight. This canyon is a gateway to some of the best and most scenic riding you’ll find anywhere in the country.

I have a ton of reasons why I enjoy this ride so much so I’ll try to stick to my top points as to not rattle on too long. Some of the best riding in UT is only an hour from Provo Canyon making it the perfect way as a possible meeting point or to start your ride. Yes it is a major thoroughfare for the small towns and communities to come into the city, however it's two lanes both directions and the roadway a mix of pavement and concrete is perfect. With a posted 55 mph most vehicles travel the canyon 65mph and the bikes are solid and stable at 80/100 mph depending on rider experience and as long as you don't get hit by the UHP (highway patrol). It's a smooth and steady incline/decline with all high speed tight and long sweeping turns, some being the perfect left/right immediate transitions. You know the ones all the speed freaks look for!

As for the view you get from this major canyon, it’s nothing short of spectacular. Rolling hills grass hills turn to drastic jagged granite cliffs spotted with pine trees. The Provo River that feeds into the 2nd largest body of water in UT (Utah Lake) runs along the side of the lower section of the canyon. Also in the lower section of the canyon is the majestic Bridal Veil Waterfall. This huge cascading waterfall seems to appear from nowhere. There’s plenty of parking and places to pull off to take in the sights and snap a few pics to take home with you. You can also walk down to the base of the falls and really take in sights up close and personal.

As you continue towards the middle section of the canyon, there's a short tunnel to rev or honk through that runs adjacent to the river with a great view of all the fly fishermen in the river. The road soon splits into different elevation separating you for the oncoming traffic for a brief but unique feel.

As you reach the upper area of the canyon, you’ll ride over the dam of Deer Creek Reservoir. This is a large beautiful blue lake set in the mountains with a lot of photo ops of Mt. Timpanogos and makes for all kinds of recreation in the area. The road will wind all the way around the lake giving you a perfect view of the lake, scenery, boaters, fishing, and on the east end of the lake is a popular spot for the local kite surfing folks. Its interesting to watch as these guys surf along the white capps and take off in the air 20/30 feet.

From here you can access the small but amazing towns of Midway UT know for itsunique Swiss feel, Heber UT for that traditional western small town feel, and probably most well know is Park City UT for it’s mountain/mining resort feel. Some of the smaller farming towns in the area being Francis UT for its gateway to Wolf Creek Pass, Kamas UT for it gateway to the Mirror Lake and the High Uintas, and Oakley UT for Rockport reservoir and access to I80 to Park City or Evanston Wy. You’ll also take the canyon from I15 to access the Daniels Summit and Strawberry Reservoir areas along hwy 40 which is a must as well.

If you have a choice as to when to travel the canyon, I would suggest heading east during sunrise and west during the sunset. For whatever reason the way the light bounces of the trees and cliffs with the incredible colors we get in the sky here in UT will be something you’ll always remember and something to bring you back.
