Guardsman Pass, Utah

Huge granite peaks pushing out of the ground, beautiful aspen groves, and so much more

Located in the heart of the Salt Lake City Valley, this ride is easy to access and won't disappoint. Although it’s a short ride considering some of the others in it’s proximity, it's packed with the best of what Utah has to offer to riders. The pass can be accessed from the SLC valley via I15 or I80 to the 215 and the 6200 south CottonWood Heights area. You’ll follow the signs for the ski areas (Alta, Brighton, and Solitude). From Park City Utah you can access it from Main street to Park Ave to Prospector Ave following signs to the Montage Deer Valley Resort ie route 224. From Midway Utah, you’ll take Homestead Drive towards Wasatch State Park on the same route 224 up and over the pass to either Park City or over to Big Cotton Wood Canyon into the Salt Lake Valley.

From the Big Cottonwood side, there is usually a fair amount of traffic due to all the hiking trails and recreating in the lower part of the canyon. It is a bit unfortunate as there are very few days when you can really ride the wonderful tight cornered, cliff side road without traffic. If you do catch it on a day where there is little or no traffic, make the most of it and enjoy!

Entering the pass from Park City or Midway is beautiful year around once the pass is open from the years snowfall. Entering from Big Cottonwood Canyon is a bit drab for a moment till you climb in elevation a bit. It's not something I ever really pay attention to or worry about as the road with its switchbacks keeps you pretty focused anyway.

Along the way you see a few different ski areas, a golf course, some epic cliff side views, huge granite peaks pushing out of the ground, beautiful aspen groves, and so much more. If you check the calendar of events for the ski resorts mentioned above, there's usually some kind of summer activity going on to fill some of your time during the ride should you chose to.

The roads are excellent most of the way with a short ½ mile section at the very top of the pass going/coming into the Park City/Midway being a bit rough and bumpy but nothing to worry about or discourage you from riding it. Other than that just keep an eye on the traffic and pedestrians and you'll have a fantastic ride, one in which you'll return many times.
